The Peter Faust Dam

Lake Proserpine, which is also known as Peter Faust Dam is situated 26 kilometres inland from the Whitsunday town of Proserpine. Proserpine is also just a short drive from Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour the gateway to the famous Whitsunday Islands and The Great Barrier Reef. Lake Proserpine plays host to some of the biggest Barramundi and Sooty Grunter found in impoundments in Australia, making it the ideal sport fishing destination.

When full the Peter Faust Dam covers 4350ha. The Peter Faust Dam was constucted for irrigation, flood management and to maintain a steady flow to the town's water supply.  Construction of the dam was finished prior to December 1990 just before the big wet of 1991.  It was anticipated that to fill the dam completely it would tkae 10 years.  Although after the first wet season the dam was at 98% capacity.

The Invitational Catch & Release Fishing Tournament is held in October each year and all competitors must fish with the 15 kg Bully Braid that is supplied. The tournament is restricted to 35 teams each made up of two anglers. The major challenge for each angler is how to fight and land a metre long Barra before it entangles your lure and line in the submerged timber that remains standing throughout the western side of the dam. Permits are required for fishing in the lake, which can be purchased from all local fishing tackle supply stores in Proserpine & Airlie Beach.

Watersports / Waterskiing

Lake Proserpine is also a fabulous spot for some fresh-water waterskiing & other boating activities. Bring your boat, pack a picnic lunch and set up for the day on the shores of the lake at one of the picnic tables dotted around the perimeter. The family can watch the action from the shore, play in the fenced childrens' playground or hop in the water for some watersports.
